CDL Drivers: Protect Your CDL Information from Fraud

Fraudulent online activity is increasing, and commercial drivers are being targeted by scammers attempting to misuse information from FMCSA systems, including the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. These scams can lead to compromised CDL information, inaccurate Clearinghouse records, and serious safety and employment consequences.

What Is Happening

Scammers are contacting commercial drivers and attempting to obtain personal information, including:

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) number
  • Date of birth
  • First and last name

In some cases, scammers may falsely claim to be a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) who can resolve an open violation. Others may pose as an employer offering to report a negative return-to-duty (RTD) or follow-up test result.

Once scammers obtain a driver’s CDL or CLP information, they may enter false information into the Clearinghouse in exchange for payment. They may later demand additional payments while threatening to report fraudulent drug and alcohol program violations on the driver’s record.

What You Should Do

  • Do not pay or provide information to anyone offering to update your Clearinghouse record without completing the required RTD and follow-up testing process.
  • If someone contacts you requesting your CDL information and you are unsure of their identity, do not respond.
  • Report suspected fraud to the FMCSA Clearinghouse Team.
  • If possible, take a screenshot of the suspicious message or communication.

Protect Your Personally Identifiable Information

Your CDL information is considered personally identifiable information, or PII. Do not share your PII unless you are certain of the individ

ual’s identity and the request is for a legitimate business purpose.

Complete the Return-to-Duty Process Legally and Safely

The return-to-duty process is designed to protect public safety and ensure that CDL drivers receive the appropriate evaluation, treatment, or edu

cation before operating a commercial motor vehicle again.

Drivers going through the RTD process are responsible for verifying that their SAP is properly credentialed. Before sharing personal information or making any payments, confirm that the SAP meets the requirements outlined in 49 CFR 40.281.

Do not look for shortcuts. If you have a drug or alcohol program violation, follow the proper process to resolve it legally and safely.

Engaging in fraudulent Clearinghouse activity could jeopardize your CDL, your employment, and your livelihood. If you believe you have been tar

geted by fraud or your information has been compromised, contact the FMCSA Clearinghouse Team immediately.
